Description
Officially Federally recognized in January of 2026, The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina is the largest Native American tribe east of the Mississippi. Their homeland is centered along the Lumbee River in Robeson and surrounding counties. Recognized by North Carolina since 1885, the Lumbee formed from several Indigenous groups who came together in this swampy region as a refuge from colonization. They are known for strong community ties, church-centered religious life, and a long tradition of educational advocacy, including ties to UNC–Pembroke.
