Description
The origin of the black and white design that is familiar to us today dates back to the early sixteenth century when pirates would fly a solid black flag from their ships. The black flag, which was meant to indicate that a ship was carrying the plague, was used to trick the law into staying away. The ruse didn’t last too long however and soon the pirates were proudly embellishing their flags with symbols of death identifying themselves and frightening their victims into giving up their booty. The most popular of these symbols, the skull and crossbones, is what decorates the Jolly Roger flag today.
