Mauritania

The national flag of Mauritania was adopted on April 1, 1959, and featured a green background with gold crescent and star symbol. On August 5, 2017, a referendum was held, and two red stripes were added to the flag representing “the efforts and sacrifices that the people of Mauritania will keep consenting, to the price of their blood, to defend their territory”. Green symbolizes Islam, gold represents the sands of the Sahara desert, and the crescent and star are symbols of Islam.
